[EN] AMS-IX breaks through 5 Terabits per second ceiling

PR: New peak in internet traffic shows growth of 19% compared to end 2015

Amsterdam – 21 November 2016 – AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange) broke through the 5 Terabits per second (Tbps) ceiling on November 20 at around 8:30 PM. Several factors are behind this new record in peak internet traffic one of which is the growth of the total capacity of the operational customer connections at the Internet Exchange by an additional 4.5 Tbps, compared to the end of 2015. With a new total connected capacity of 21.8 Tbps, AMS-IX clearly ranks among the largest Internet Exchanges in the world.

    Proudly looking ahead

“From our vantage point as an internet node many signs of growth were already apparent to us this year. In May we surpassed the 20 Tbps mark for our total connected capacity, followed by exceeding the number of 800 connected networks and now we have broken our record for peak internet traffic,” said Job Witteman, CEO of AMS-IX. “Breaking through these barriers makes us proud and positive about the future. The fact that in the first nine months of 2016 a whopping 90% of the newly connected parties were from outside the Netherlands (compared to 86% in 2015) also confirms how attractive our platform is for international parties.”

    About AMS-IX

Established in the early 1990s as a not-for-profit organisation, AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange) is a neutral, independent internet exchange based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. At peak moments AMS-IX now handles more than 5 Terabits per second of internet traffic, and this platform now interconnects over 800 IP networks, making it one of the largest Internet Exchanges in the world.

The AMS-IX platform provides IP interconnection and peering services of guaranteed high quality for all types of IP traffic, whether it be regular data, Voice over IP, mobile internet traffic or video. Peering enables these networks to provide their end-users (consumers and business customers) with stable, fast, cost-effective internet services.

AMS-IX also hosts the world's first mobile peering points: the Global GPRS Roaming Exchange (GRX), the Mobile Data Exchange (MDX) and the first interconnection of IPX networks (Inter-IPX). AMS-IX also manages two internet exchanges abroad: AMS-IX Hong Kong and AMS-IX Caribbean on Curaçao. AMS-IX’s subsidiary AMS-IX USA Inc. manages AMS-IX Bay Area, AMS-IX Chicago and AMS-IX New York in the United States.
