The data centre at KAO Park, KAO Data Campus, will be one of the UK’s largest data centre campi when it comes online later this year.

The Harlow Enterprise Zone comprises two more developments in addition to KAO Park. This includes London Road North which will see the development of a new 25-acre Science Park on a greenfield site owned by Harlow Council, and Templefields, a long term re-development of an existing industrial estate into a modern business park.

Jan Daan Luycks, MD at KAO Data Campus, told Data Economy: “The discovery of fibre optic cable technology on this site 50 years ago, has been fundamental to the UK’s economic development.

“The current renaissance of KAO Data Campus encapsulates this history and reaffirms the importance of the UK’s position as a global business hub, as well as its pledge to scientific and technological excellence.”

JCA Engineering has been recently appointed as KAO Data’s construction partner on phase one of the KAO Data Campus.

Power utility contractor Matrix Networks has been tasked with delivering the UKPN adoptable 33kV/11kV 43.5MVA sub-station providing capacity to support the whole Campus.

The sub-station is due for completion April 2017, with practical completion for the first data centre scheduled for the end of 2017.

    Upgrade das instalações da Nortel

    Video: (vale assistir o upgrade)

... transforming the former Nortel Telecommunications site in the Harlow Enterprise Zone into a business park and data centre campus called Kao Park.

Project management company Goldacre Ventures is hoping to build upon the 35 acre site’s heritage as the birthplace of fibre optic technology. It was on the London Road site in 1966 that Sir Charles Kao first transmitted light over long distances via optical glass fibres making modern fibre optic communications possible.

David Bloom of Goldacre Ventures said: “Kao Park is a unique opportunity to leverage the legacy of cutting edge technology and develop a highly connected and secure, state of the art data centre campus that will attract and service a broad range of tenants for the Enterprise Zone.”

This week Harlow-based civil engineering company Pryor was appointed the main contractor.

Graeme Howard, Managing Director of Pryor said: “The Pryor Group are very pleased to have secured this prestigious contract in our home town where we have been trading since 1947.

“We have been working closely with our supply chain, the majority of which is from Harlow and the surrounding area, to ensure the project will be run safely, to time and budget. We look forward to working with HPL to develop the site next year.”

This is the first phase in a programme to create a premium data centre campus as well as 200,000 square feet of grade A office space set in a newly landscaped business park.
