    [EN] Zucked

    The Harvard Crimson/ Archive.is

    May 24, 2017

Today, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg returned to the venerable Ivy League institution he famously dropped out of, revisiting his old dorm room and giving a commencement speech to the graduating class of 2017.

To commemorate the social networking titan’s return to his alma mater, the website of Harvard’s 144-year-old newspaper (or whomever gained control of it) ran as its frontpage story: “MARK ZOINKERBURG AT IT AGAIN.”

Related stories included “OOPS: MINK PINKLEBINK ACCIDENTALLY ‘LIKES’ OWN COMMENCEMENT SPEECH.”

The site has been intermittently unavailable (though archives confirm the Crimson’s homepage actually did display this Incredibly Good content), so Gizmodo has had difficulty determining how many of these articles link to anything in particular.

Update 5/25/17 4:49pm ET: Approximately two hours after this blog went live, Gizmodo was contacted by phone by two individuals claiming to be the “Winklevink twins.” They asserted that Mark Zickleberg had stolen their idea to hack The Crimson’s website. Both Winklevink twins denied responsibility for the hack, claiming it was either Zickleberg himself or the members of The Harvard Lampoon (who they called “geniuses.”) They thoroughly denied being part of the Lampoon.

We’ll remind these Winklewinks that—if they’re free between kayaking practices—GMG is currently hiring for a variety of entry-level positions.

    "Poetic prank"

A poetic prank: Harvard's student newspaper makes fun of commencement speaker Mark Zuckerberg

    Alex Heath
    May 25, 2017

The apparent prank is fitting given that Zuckerberg hacked into the email accounts of two Harvard Crimson reporters in 2004 during his sophomore year.

We noticed the changes to The Crimson's website Thursday afternoon, minutes before Zuckerberg was expected to give the address. Many of the fake stories were quickly taken down, and the Crimson confirmed to Business Insider that it had in fact been hacked.

"Earlier today, The Harvard Crimson's website was altered by an unauthorized user," Crimson President Derek K. Choi told BI. "We are currently working to repair the breach. We regret any inconvenience to our users and look forward to the rest of Commencement."

Zuckerberg’s commencement speech streamed on Facebook with hilariously awful captions

    May 25, 2017

Man, Mark Zuckerberg is having a hell of a day. Earlier this morning, just before he was scheduled to deliver Harvard University’s commencement speech, his alma mater’s student newspaper website was hacked to elaborately troll the Facebook CEO. And while that got fixed by the time Zuck walked on stage, he’s now facing yet another technical difficulty: utter gibberish for captions.

Of course Zuck’s speech was going to be live streamed on his own platform, but wow, those of us watching from an office setting are getting a heck of a treat.

We’ve reached out to Facebook and the team told us that it was Harvard University’s team that did the captioning, so you can thank / blame whatever machine or human transcribed the speech.
